Four Steps to Clean Recycling: Make Your Plastics Upcycling-Ready

Proper preparation of recyclables is one of the most critical links in the circular economy chain. At ECOHOPE, we are not just handling waste — we are creating upcycled products. Plastics that are dirty or mis‑sorted can contaminate entire batches and make them unsuitable for regeneration.

Follow the golden rules below to ensure your recycling efforts deliver maximum environmental impact.

Part 1: The 4-Step Rule for Preparing Plastics

To turn discarded plastics into high-quality upcycled products, please complete these four steps:

Step 1: Empty & Remove
  • Pour out all liquids and food residues.
  • For thick contents like peanut butter or conditioner, wipe the inside with a tissue or scraper before rinsing.
  • Pro tip: Whenever possible, remove full plastic sleeve labels from bottles to increase the purity of 1 (PET) bottles during recycling.
Step 2: Rinse
  • Use a small amount of water to rinse the inside of containers and remove obvious grease or sugar.
  • Note: You do not need large amounts of detergent or a sterile surface — just make sure there is no visible dirt and no strong odour.
Step 3: Dry
  • Wet containers can grow bacteria and produce odours, which affect hygiene and storage.
  • Place containers upside down to air-dry and make sure there is no standing water inside before you store them for recycling.
Step 4: Sort & Flatten
  • Sort plastics according to the 1–7 resin codes on the bottom, where possible.
  • Flatten bottles to save storage space and reduce carbon emissions during transport.
  • Use the ECOHOPE App to book on-site collection so your cleaned plastics flow directly into professional recycling and upcycling processes.

FAQs and Common Misconceptions

Why can’t slightly dirty plastics be recycled?

Food and liquid residues such as oils or sugars can burn or decompose during processing, causing black spots, odours, or defects in recycled plastics. This lowers material quality and can force entire batches to be discarded, so clean recycling is essential to protect the value of upcycled products.
