Stop Just Switching to Paper Tableware! Under Hong Kong’s 2024 Plastic Ban, How Can Companies Use Upcycling to Lock In ESG Performance?

In Hong Kong, tens of thousands of empty contact lens blisters are discarded every day. These blisters are made from very high‑purity No. 5 PP (polypropylene), but because they are small and lightweight, they are often screened out by traditional automated recycling systems and end up in landfills.

To change this, ECOHOPE has helped corporate partners launch an innovative “Contact Lens Blister Upcycling Program”, turning this overlooked waste stream into a premium Upcycled Eternality Pen and offering a practical blueprint for companies that want to implement the circular economy in a tangible way.

The “Rebirth Journey” of a Contact Lens Blister

A typical contact lens pack consists of an aluminium foil seal and a PP plastic blister. At ECOHOPE’s corporate collection points, participants are guided to follow three simple steps: Peel, Rinse, Dry.

Peel: Completely remove the foil seal. The aluminium can then enter the metal recycling stream.

Rinse: Rinse away any remaining saline solution to keep the material clean.

Dry: Air‑dry the blister and place it into the dedicated collection box to prevent bacterial growth.

ECOHOPE adheres to the principle of “local recycling, local design, local manufacturing”. Once collected, the blisters are sent to local partner workshops, where they go through:

Crushing & pelletizing: No. 5 PP plastic is crushed and processed into uniform pellets.

High‑temperature injection molding: Using precision molds, the recycled plastic is reshaped into pen barrels. Compared with shipping waste overseas, this greatly reduces transport‑related carbon emissions.

What Makes the Upcycled Eternality Pen Special?

This upcycled product is far from an ordinary ballpoint pen. Each Upcycled Eternality Pen is equipped with a special graphite‑alloy tip and an ergonomically designed barrel made from recycled PP.

“Endless” writing performance: As the tip moves across paper, alloy metal molecules are deposited on the surface. A single pen can write up to around 20 km, more than 150 times the writing distance of a typical pencil.

No sharpening required: There is no wooden barrel to shave away, which avoids the timber consumption of conventional pencils and aligns perfectly with the concept of using recycled PP.

Comfortable to hold: The barrel is shaped into an easy‑to‑grip triangle, improving writing comfort during prolonged use.

Through this process, tiny, easily ignored blisters are transformed into durable, high‑value stationery that can carry a company’s story and values.

From Contact Lens Blisters to Your Own Green Assets

Contact lens blisters are just the beginning.

Many industries generate niche plastic waste streams—such as medicine bottles, bottle caps, or laboratory consumables—that are difficult to handle through standard recycling channels but are ideal for customised upcycling projects.

If your company also has special plastic waste that is currently being landfilled or incinerated, you can contact ECOHOPE’s team at [email protected]. Our consultants can co‑design a tailored upcycling solution that turns your waste into unique green assets—whether that is an Upcycled Eternality Pen, corporate gifts, or functional everyday items that tell your sustainability story every time they are used.
